a major new initiative. he says it is time to get serious about gun control. kim hutcherson has details. 3 deadly mass shootings seem to be a regular occurance in america.and president obama has regularly called for tougher restrictions on guns. (chris christie/republican presidential candidate)"he knows that he can't get it through congress so he's just gonna try and do it by executive action as if he's king barack obama."(marco rubio/republican presidential candidate)"all these executive orders he's gonna come out with tomorrow that are gonna undermine our second amendment rights? on my first day in office, they're gone."i'm kim hutcherson reporting. 3 the president will join cnn's anderson cooper for an hour-long town hall meeting on gun control at george mason university this thursday at eight p-m eastern. he will also meet with attorney general loretta lynch to discuss options for tougher gun restrictions. 3 3 the possible expanded background checks could affect local gun shows. the land of the sky gun and knife show has been in asheville for 25 years. we spoke with manager mike kent. he says about 95 percent of gun sellers at shows have federal licenses... which requires them to perform background checks. but he says

the other 5 percent -- who do not have licenses -- are hobby dealers. they are not required to do background checks. 3 38:26-35most of these people are just like us. they do not want guns to fall in the wrong hands. these people are not doing anything wrong because there's no federal law that says a man cannot sell his personal property. some licensed gun sellers say they have no problem with expanded background checks. they say it prevents potential buyers from getting guns after they were already told "no" by a licensed dealer. 3 3 this week evangelist franklin graham will begin a 50 state tour. he says the goal is to encourage conservative christians to vote for candidates who uphold biblical principles. he says he will not endorce any candidates. reverend graham's first event is set for tuesday in des moines, iowa. 3 3 there is still no word this morning what caused an apartment fire in barnardsville. three people were transported to a burn center after the fire yesterday morning at "the rock bridge apartments." flames destroyed several units. people living there tell news 13 the son of the landlord made sure no one was left behind. was a little after two and a loud knock on the sliding glass door woke us up, get out, fire, get out, fire. mark gantt, resident tristan was pounding on our door, he's the supers son and he was trying to get everybody out. he was telling us there was a fire, come out, come out. the names and conditions of the three victims have not been released. 3 3 investigators are also still trying to figure out what caused a fire at a duplex in candler. it started just after 11 a-m yesterday morning at the building on wilson road. firefighters say the people inside made it out safely. one unit was a total loss. another unit was significantly damaged. the red cross is 3 3 3 happening today... the woman accused of killing a wlos employee is also scheduled to make a court appearance. robin richardson is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of tim fry. investigators say richardson claims she shot fry because he assaulted her. richardson

3 3 3 today in our carolina roundup... a shooting death yesterday in charlotte... becomes the queen city's first homicide of the year. shelton kimble is charged with murdering tyrone burch. burch was found in a parking lot after he was shot. detectives say the men knew each other... violence. 3 3 a pastor in north carolina may have saved the lives of his congregation. pastor larry wright confronted a gunman in fayetteville during his sermon about gun violence. on new year's eve, a man walked into the church, carrying a rifle -- and a magazine of ammunition. wright says he walked up to the man and asked, "can i help you?" that is when the gunman asked the pastor to pray for him. 3 "when i told the congregation, it's ok, he wants prayer and i began to pray for him, and the power of god hit and he fell to his knees and began to cry and weep and he had his face on the ground." wright took the rifle and gave it to a deacon. police arrived during the dramatic incident and took

the man into custody. officers say the man was voluntarily committed to a mental health facility. 3 3 a wake county man is in critical condition... after crashing his s-u-v into a house. investigators say he lost control... and ran into the home in cary yesterday morning. the vehicle wound-up wedged in the crawl-space under the building. officials say no one was living in the home. 3 3 it can be tough to keep those new year's resolutions. but this morning... we are hearing from the experts on how to stay on track. news 13's lauren brigman joins us live from mission health's weight management center. lauren... if we have made a fitness resolution, but want to avoid joining a gym what can we do?3 3 3 3

at business headlines. the dow was down 178 points thursday to close at 17 thousand 425. the nasdaq was down 58 points to end trading at 50-07. 3 3 the u-s department of justice is investigating how blue bell creameries handled the ice cream contamination linked to 10 reported cases of listeriosis. three people died. prosecutors are examining whether company executives knew they were sending contaminated product to consumers. blue bell said listeria was found on the lid of a food service cup the month before the recalls in april of last year. however, an investigation by the c-d-c showed the listeria outbreak 3 3 many boston globe employees worked double-duty this past weekend. dozens of editors and reporters at the newspaper delivered thousands of copies yesterday. the globe has been dealing with issues since switching to a different delivery company last week. many subscribers say they never received some of their papers. so globe employees took matters into their own hands.

today. there will be tighter security as 600 employees return to work. the center has been closed since december 2nd... when killers syed rizwan and his wife tashfeen malik opened fire during a holiday party. both were killed later in a shootout with police. farook was an inspector for san bernardino county's department of public health... and worked with many of the victims. 3 3 an 18-month-old girl was killed after a fire in bridgeport connecticut early yesterday morning. firefighters say they found her body under the crib in her bedroom. two other children and three adults were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. officials say the smoke-alarms had been disconnected. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. 3 3 flooding has ravaged central illinois. the governor says he will continue his flood damage assessment tour today in christian county. the flood waters have already killed four people. the governor surveyed flood damage throughout the state yesterday to determine what can be done to help victims. residents are prepared to evacuate if needed. 3 3
